Omni Live in Philly with Yard Act

On Thursday, October 10th, wiry post-punkers Omni hailing from Atlanta, Georgia, and Yard Act, a British indie rock band from Leeds, West Yorkshire, played at the historic Union Transfer in Philadelphia. Omni opened up the show, they are signed to Sub Pop and released their most recent album Souvenir in February of this year. A tight three piece band consisting of Frankie Broyles on guitar, Chris Yonker on drums and Philip Frobos on bass and lead vocals, Omni has a unique nervy post-punk sound to them with angular guitars and a grounding bass line. Although they were just opening on this tour, they won over the audience with their unique sound, the majority of the set was songs from the new album, with a few mixed in from their debut record Deluxe and another called Multi-Task. They also covered a Sheryl Crowl song somewhat unexpectedly- ‘All I Wanna Do’ – which was honestly funny and charming.

After Omni, Yard Act took the stage. Touring their March 2024 record ‘Where’s My Utopia’, they played an energetic set as a six piece band including two backup singers. The backup singers stole the show with their dancing and beautiful voices. The band consists of James Smith (vocals, lyrics), Ryan Needham (bass), Sam Shipstone (guitar) and Jay Russell (drums). The set was made up mostly of songs from the recent album, with about half of the songs from their 2022 record ‘The Overload’. The crowd was dancing along with the music and moved around a bit more than they did during Omni, and the singer James Smith was very dynamic, strutting around the stage, mic in his hand. He had a great stage presence. Glad I got to catch this stunning set from Yard Act, as they are from the UK and may not tour the US very often.
