Puerto Rican star Nicky Jam will be recognized with the Special Achievement honor at Premios Tu Música Urbano 2020, Billboard can exclusively announce. The chart-topping star will be honored for his impressive career as one of the early pioneers of reggaeton, through his current multi-platinum, cross-over success and great influence and support for a new generation of artists.
“The urban genre stars are undoubtedly artists who, like their music, were marginalized and highly criticized,” says José "Pompi" Vallejo, President of Mr & Mrs Entertainment. “Despite perseverance, believing in themselves and always getting up after any fall have made them stars worldwide. Nicky Jam is definitely an example of that.”
Jam will join the Special Award’s first recipient, Daddy Yankee, who early in his career worked with Jam as part of the hit duo “Los Cangris." Earlier this year, the pair casually reunited and released “Muévelo” after 20 years of being apart.
“I feel honored that I will receive this recognition from the Urbano music community, and in my own island where I began my career,” added Jam. “The support from my people, my colleagues and my fans is the motivation I need to continue growing and creating music.”
The Premos Tu Música 2020 nominations are leading by Bad Bunny who has 19 nods. He is followed by Anuel AA (18), Daddy Yankee (16), J Balvin (16), Ozuna (15), Karol G (8), and Jam (8). The ceremony, produced by Mr & Mrs Entertainment and Sora & Company, will take place at Coliseo de Puerto Rico on March 5.
