Having released a collection of new singles behind him, JVLY is set to release a new EP sometime soon. The latest offering from Newcastle-based artist is the delicious Aporia. Alongside the lo-fi fuzz and sensual R&B sheen are stretched synths and a touch of sax with JVLY’s tender vocals. It all just feels so right.
Speaking on Aporia’s process and inspiration, JVLY says:
“I usually spend most time shaping all the instruments and layers, the writing tends to come further down the track for me. I didn’t write anything down for this one though, I was just playing around on the piano and singing random melodies and it sort of all worked out that way, the vocals you hear are from that first day.
I’d say that was the most satisfied I’ve ever been from finishing a song. I would’ve heard it like a hundred times while trying to wrap it up and I’m still not over it, so that’s probably a good sign. I think it mirrors the central idea of the whole EP and it captures the exact feel I wanted for this little album, the uncertainty. I couldn’t think of the right name for it, I was trying way too hard for ages and then I saw ‘aporia’ in a book and I googled it because I liked the word, it means “an irresolvable internal contradiction”. Seems to sum it up perfectly.”
Aporia also comes with a Rodrigo Badoino directed music video which uses footage that JVLY shot while in Japan a few months ago. This footage is blended with some extra material that was shot back in Sydney and stars his friend Tyra Cartledge. The two offered some insight into the visuals:
“I spent some time in Japan earlier this year before it all got really weird. I took an old camcorder and just shot a bunch of footage with some sort of visual in mind for this song. I didn’t really have a concept, but I knew how I wanted the shots to look. When I got back, I met up with my friend Rodrigo Badoino who is an amazing filmmaker. I gave him the footage I had to have a look through, and I left it in his hands to form the concept. We had a night of shooting around Sydney with Tyra Cartledge (the girl in the video) to capture the other side of the story.” – JVLY
“We decided to use two different aspect ratios as it plays with the theme of the song. Visually you either have one or the other. Every choice from story to colour was made with this in mind. You can’t have it both ways.”- Rodrigo Badoino
