Jake Gyllenhaal Gave A Rare Interview About Being Legally Blind: “I Like To Think It’s Advantageous”

Jake Gyllenhaal Talks About Being Legally Blind

According to the publication, Jake has 20/1250 vision and was born with a lazy eye that naturally resolved itself. He wears intensive corrective lenses or thick, Coke bottle-style glasses to see more clearly.

“I like to think it’s advantageous,” he told the publication. “I’ve never known anything else. When I can’t see in the morning, before I put on my glasses, it’s a place where I can be with myself.”

Indeed, he has occasionally opted to use his blindness when acting — such as in the 2015 movie Southpaw, when he removed his contacts in order to listen more closely to the dramatic scene happening.

The actor seldom talks about his blindness, telling the Telegraph in 2017 of the thick glasses he had to wear as a kid, “I was an easy target, and I was always a sensitive kid.”
