Cloud District’s 2018 LP Don’t Give Up, Skeleton is a classic around these parts–after all, we’d been following the band since their Summer Slam EP in 2016. Since Don’t Give Up, Skeleton, though, the band’s been pretty quiet; 2020 saw the release of the single “Polaris,” an uncharacteristically electronic instrumental track that sounds nothing like their previous work. (Really pretty song, though!)
That all ends today. On Friday, Cloud District will release their latest EP Proof of Life, which, yes, is proof of life for the band–but it’s more than that. It doesn’t just prove that Cloud District is back and making music; it’s the New York five-piece at the top of their game, turning in the very best material they’ve ever put out. And the very best part is that you don’t have to wait until Friday–we’ve got an exclusive premiere of Proof of Life two days early. You won’t want to miss this one; these songs are lush and layered, soft and spacey, and reward close attention. Tracks like “Archimedes’ Death Ray” and “Vaporwave Nightmare” are some of the most delicate, atmospheric cuts in their catalog, and opener “Shield” and “Two Moons,” perhaps the best song Cloud District’s ever released, unfold like tapestries, expanding ever outward. Even the 58-second “Buy It for Life” is essential. Give Proof of Life a listen below.
Proof of Life is out Friday.
