Cage The Elephant kicked off September with a captivating show at Ascend Amphitheater in Nashville, celebrating the release of their new album, Neon Pill. Marking the band’s first album in five years, Neon Pill is an emotionally intense record, exploring themes of loss and hardship. On stage, the album’s depth was brought to life as the band delivered a dynamic set that not only highlighted their latest work but also included a mix of songs across their discography.
The Neon Pill tour’s lineup feels like spending a night at the same festival stage with a mixed bill where there’s something for everyone.
The night started off with the grungy, guitar-driven two-piece, Girl Tones, followed by Willow Avalon, whose classic country sound feels like stepping back in time to a show at The Opry and featured a guest appearance singer from Maggie Antone. Next up was solo singer Bakhar, who delivered an engaging performance using only a backing track, proving that a dynamic show can be achieved even without a full band.
The crowd’s energy revved up as Young The Giant took the stage and launched into the track “The Walk Home”, followed by fan favorite “Cough Syrup”. Later into the set, frontman Sameer Gadhia took a moment to reflect on 2024 being the tenth anniversary of their acclaimed album, Mind Over Matter, playing “It’s About Time” and the title track. He shared his thoughts on how the singles from this album have evolved into some of the biggest hits of their career and how it feels to revisit these songs they wrote in their 20s as a new version of yourself.
Cage The Elephant made quite the entrance as they took the stage, with the roaring drums of “Broken Boy” and dramatic flames that set the tone for an electrifying night. Despite recently breaking his foot and navigating the stage on a scooter, lead singer Matt Shultz delivered an unparalleled performance, using the scooter as a tool to move around stage and feed into the crowd’s energy. With an extensive 22 song set, every moment was packed with intensity and excitement.
