Beyoncé and Lizzo claim honors as the top music nominees for the 51st NAACP Image Awards with eight and six nominations, respectively. The two-hour ceremony will air live for the first time via BET Networks on Feb. 22 (8 pm. ET).
Beyoncé netted six music category nominations, including outstanding album (Homecoming: The Live Album), outstanding female artist, outstanding song-traditional (“Spirit”), outstanding song-contemporary (“Before I Let Go”), outstanding duo, group or collaboration (“Brown Skin Girl” featuring Blue Ivy, SAINt JHN & WizKid) and outstanding soundtrack/compilation album (The Lion King: The Gift). Her work also earned two additional nods for outstanding variety show-series or special and outstanding documentary-television (both for Homecoming: A Film by Beyoncé),
Lizzo’s six nods include entertainer of the year (against Angela Bassett, Billy Porter, Regina King and Tyler Perry), outstanding album, outstanding female artist, outstanding song-traditional (for “Jerome”), outstanding song-contemporary (“Juice”) and outstanding music video/visual album.
Rounding out the list of multiple music nominees are H.E.R., Chris Brown, Ari Lennox, Khalid, India.Arie, Fantasia and PJ Morton. Additional notable nods include Janelle Monae (Harriet) and Jennifer Lopez (Hustlers) for outstanding supporting actress in a motion picture, Cynthia Erivo (Harriet) for outstanding actress in a motion picture, outstanding breakthrough performance in a motion picture and outstanding song-traditional (“Stand Up”), Motown Records for outstanding soundtrack/compilation album for Queen & Slim, Netflix’s Rhythm + Flow for outstanding reality program, reality competition or game show and The Black Godfather for outstanding documentary-film.
