American Football Live in Brooklyn

American Football’s LP1 is a certified emo classic. From the twinkly guitars, to the vulnerable and emotional lyrics, the entire 40 minutes and 54 seconds are true ear candy. Since it’s release in 1999, American Football have only gained more and more momentum in the emo-space. Releasing two more LPs and collaborating with heavy hitters such as Hayley Williams of Paramore, Elizabeth Powell, and Rachel Goswell of slowdive. Yet, something that lead singer and guitarist Mike Kinsella said to the packed crowd at Brooklyn’s Warsaw Concerts rang true. Kinsella said, What I like about this record is that you can listen to it at any time and it still feels true, and he’s right. There’s a reason why so many fans come to this record, even 25 years later. It’s beautifully written and arguably a perfect record. The record’s artwork is incredibly recognizable. So recognizable, that the band bought the house and now have it available on Air B’n’B.

The band are hosting a mix of openers for this tour. On this night, Hello Mary opened. The band were atmospheric, and certainly took inspiration from the headliner and emo-classics alike. However, most were there in anticipation for what LP1 would sound like live. The minute the band stepped on stage, they caught the whole’s venue’s attention. The band are masters of their craft. They play effortlessly and expertly with each track. Playing all through tracks 2 – 9, saving their most popular, “Never Meant” for the very end of the set. All tracks were carbon-copies of the record, which is impressive 25 years later. They then played a handful of tracks from LP2 and Lp3 which were a delight. It’s so wonderful to see these musicians be so humble, genuine, and truly loving what they do. If you haven’t given LP1 a listen, what are you waiting for.
