Spirit of the Beehive Live in Philly

On a rainy dreary Wednesday, you’d expect people to not go out to a show, but the venue Union Transfer was full as people packed in to see Spirit of the Beehive. Last year while on tour, all of their gear was stolen and they had to postpone the tour until now.

Up next onstage was Kassie Krut. Also based in New York City, an electronic band consisting of Eve Alpert, Kasra Krut and Matt Anderegg, Eve and Kasra formerly played in famed art rock band Palm. Matt used to play in the band Mothers. Kasra and Eve both sang and played keys and a synth while Matt intently played a drum pad. They released an EP in December of last year on Fire Talk Records. They were a nice warm up to the mix of synths and guitar that Spirit of the Beehive play.

Headlining the show was Spirit of the Beehive. The Philadelphia based experimental indie rock band has been active since at least 2014, often described as ‘your favorite band’s favorite band’. Their last two albums were released on Saddle Creek Records, ‘You’ll have to lose something’ being the most recent one, from last year. They played as a five piece, and played the older hit ‘Natural Devotion’ early on in the set. Frontman Zack Schwartz mentioned that they had played UT before but never headlined. He said ‘Thanks for coming to our best Philly show’. It was great to see them play again after the major loss of their gear. They were still dynamic and tight as a live band as usual.
