Alice Phoebe Lou Live in Philly

Posted: by The Alt Editing Staff

Alice Phoebe Lou and her talented band played a stunning set opening up for Clairo at the Franklin Music Hall in Philadelphia on Friday, November 1st. The South African indie pop singer released an incredible album last year, ‘Shelter’, as well as a few others including ‘Glow’ in the past years. She has a knack for writing heartfelt, sensual love songs and opened up the set with the song ‘Touch’ a b-side single from 2020.

The lighting on the stage was soft blueish and yellow- with an elaborate backdrop set up for Clairo’s performance not in use. Alice played guitar and sang and she had a guitarist, bass player and drummer accompanying her. I recognized some members of entrancing indie folk band Loving in her backing band (the guitarist and drummer). She seemed glad to get to play there and said her tour with Clairo had been a blast. The crowd was quite young as it was an all ages show and there were not 2 but 3 medical emergencies in the crowd which stopped her set a few times. They were all resolved, but this threw off the vibe of the show a little bit.

A highlight of the set was her song ‘lover//over the moon’. It’s a charming soft tune and when she sang ‘I’m a lover/ so let me love youuu’ it was a sweet moment. Alice did her best to keep things moving, though the last few songs felt a little rushed, timing-wise, because of the emergencies. Despite all of this, the crowd, who were probably all hearing her for the first time, were very appreciative of her music and seemed to love the songs. She closed the set with one of her most popular songs, ‘Witches’, which has 44 million streams online. Tickets for their tour can be found here.
