The Alt Weekly Roundup (10/14/24)

Posted: by The Alt Editing Staff

The Alternative Weekly Roundup is a column where our staff plugs a variety of new releases in a concise, streamlined format. Albums, singles, videos, and live sets. Check back each Monday to see what we were jamming the week prior.

Fading Signal / Miracle – Split

Fading Signal and Miracle are two of the best bands in southern hardcore, so their teamup feels natural. Each brings a slightly different flair to the genre; Fading Signal’s two tracks–neither of which hit the two-minute mark–are straightforward and dirty, picking off where they left off in 2022 with the Toy Soldier / Hearts single. Miracle’s cuts have a metallic edge to them, and they’re even sharper than anything on last year’s self-titled debut.

Jim Legxacy – “aggressive”

“aggressive” is the second Jim Legxacy single of 2024, following the beautiful “nothings changed (!)” in July. It’s much more uptempo than that track, built around a sample British rapper Chip’s 2009 single “Oopsy Daisy.” It’s also his first release for XL Recordings, and it’s set to appear on his new album Black British Music (2024), set to drop next year.

Envy – Eunoia

Envy is sneakily one of the most influential post-hardcore groups still active, and into their third decade they’re still finding ways to shake up their sound. Eunoia, the band’s eighth LP, is their most melodic yet, more or less fully breaking with screamo and diving headlong into a shimmery, shoegazey post-rock sound that retains the energy and the power of their most aggressive work. Tetsuya Fukagawa might not scream as much as he did on past albums, but the band has never sounded more commanding, more in control.

Her New Knife – “purepurepure”

Her New Knife premiered “purepurepure” on their killer Audiotree session earlier this month, and now they’ve released the studio version, the lead single from their Chrome Is Lullaby EP out later this month on Julia’s War. It’s pretty different from the booming shoegaze they’re known for, instead opting for an ominous, low-key alt rock sound spiked with otherworldly shrieks.

Ovrkast. – KAST GOT WINGS

Ovrkast.’s new tape KAST GOT WINGS follows last summer’s lush, laidback RESET! EP. The seven-track project was produced by Cardo Got Wings, and the beats all across KAST GOT WINGS are unique within Ovrkast.’s catalog. These songs are faster, harder, and cleaner than his usual material, replacing horns and piano with handclaps and sparkling cymbals. Cardo Got Wings really lights a fire under him, and Ovrkast. raps with a newfound urgency.
