The Alt Weekly Roundup (10/11)
Posted: by The Editor
The Popdosemagazine Weekly Roundup is a column where our staff plugs a variety of new releases in a concise, streamlined format. Albums, singles, videos, and live sets. Check back each Monday to see what we were jamming the week prior.
SeeYouSpaceCowboy – “Intersecting Storylines to the Same Tragedy”
SeeYouSpaceCowboy’s latest singles have really tapped into that mid-2000s metalcore sound in a way that feels neither derivative nor as corny as those bands were. “Intersecting Storylines to the Same Tragedy” is given that extra throwback feeling by a vocal feature from Aaron Gillespie, who fits seamlessly into the pulverizing track.

Cathedral Bells – “I Don’t Care Anymore”
Shoegaze has become rather oversaturated lately, but Florida’s Cathedral Bells stand out with their eerie, synthy post-punk energy. The haunting new “I Don’t Care Anymore” is a perfect single to welcome in Halloween month.

Brother Bird – “Doomsday”
“Doomsday” is the latest of Brother Bird’s many singles this year, and it might well be the best too. It’s a lush, full-throated folk rock song with a newfound heft and swell that suits her voice perfectly.

Talker – “Sad Chick”
Talker’s new one is called “Sad Chick,” and it blows her indie pop sound wide opens, swinging for the airwaves with its skyscraper hook.

Harrison Whitford – “Linoleum”
The shambling “Linoleum” is one part tasteful folk rock, one part ripping jam struggling against its fragile frame. The latest taste of Harrison Whitford’s upcoming Afraid of Nothing is a really special single, one that proves that his work on Phoebe Bridgers’ records is only a sliver of what he has to offer.

All Get Out – The Season (Acoustic)
All Get Out’s now-classic The Season is a decade old, and how better to celebrate than an acoustic re-recording of the whole affair? The record is perfect for a crisp fall day, a reinterpretation that feels more like a companion record than a rehash; many acoustic takes are bland, merely a stripped-down version of the original song, but All Get Out reimagines these tracks in such a way as to give them new life.

Mt. Oriander – This Is Not the Way I Wanted You to Find Out
2020’s been a busy year for Keith Latinen. Only months ago his new band Parting dropped their masterful Unmake Me, and now he’s back with his long-awaited solo release. He’s been teasing Mt. Oriander for years – or maybe it only feels like years – and the debut EP lives up to the hype. It’s five tracks of the indie-emo fans of Latinen’s have come to expect with a little more of the soft indie rock flavor of the early 2000s; think less Power of Failing and more Photo Album.
