Koji Konodo struck 8-bit gold in 1985 when he wrote the Super Mario Bros. theme song. To this day, it's one of the most recognizable bleep bloops ever bopped, so when Galantis and Charli XCX were approached to write the official theme song for Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan, they drew inspiration from the original.
"We Are Born To Play" is vibrant and bubbly, perfect for jumping over piranha plants and smashing question mark boxes. Charli dutifully drops lines about power ups and stars, while Galantis weaves the classic melody in and out of its own big-room builds and drops.
The singer makes a cameo in the official music video, which features live dancers thriving in a virtual Mario universe. It's not really a peek into Super Nintendo World, which is set to open this summer ahead of the Tokyo Olympics, but we're crossing our fingers it'll involve obstacle-course excitement a la Mario's side-scrolling adventures. The video also announces a forthcoming smart watch that will allow users to bring real-life activity metrics into mobile platform Nintendo games.
