Two years ago, Britney Spears declared she would “never return to the music industry,” and so far she has remained firm in that decision. She even began her year by selling the rights to her music catalog to independent publisher Primary Wave. However, for fans eager to hear new material from the pop icon, a rare discovery has emerged: “She’ll Never Be Me,” a song originally written and recorded in 2001 alongside her then-partner Justin Timberlake.
Spears initially recorded the track for her third studio album, Britney, which marks its 25th anniversary this year. The song was ultimately left unfinished and scrapped from the final tracklist to make room for other material. Produced by Alex Greggs, the song captures the distinct, erratic, and funky energy of the post-“Oops!… I Did It Again” pop landscape.
In 2022, producer Alex Greggs discussed the song’s history on The Original Doll podcast, noting that its exclusion from the album was simply a matter of quality control rather than label interference. The Britney album was already packed with hits like “I’m a Slave 4 U,” “Overprotected,” and “I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman.”
Timberlake provided background vocals for the track, which features the pair’s voices layered together. “Sometimes people don’t hear Justin’s voice until I tell them,” Greggs remarked. “They blend in there very well together. It’s kind of a shame that they never really got to do more.”
The release of this archival track arrives as Spears continues to navigate her post-conservatorship life. While her 2023 memoir, The Woman in Me, detailed the emotional toll of her relationship with Timberlake, her decision to step away from the industry was ultimately driven by her desire to reclaim autonomy after her 14-year conservatorship. The 25th-anniversary edition of Britney, featuring “She’ll Never Be Me” and four other additional songs, is set for release on November 6.
