The iconic Captain America shield that once graced the set of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert has found a new home. In a poignant moment for late-night television, Stephen Colbert officially passed the authentic Marvel artifact to his friend and fellow host, Jimmy Kimmel, during a recent broadcast.
The exchange took place on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, where Colbert appeared as a guest just one night after securing an Emmy for Outstanding Variety Series for the final season of his talk show. The shield, which has been a fixture of Colbert’s television presence for two decades, carries a legacy that bridges the worlds of comic book lore and late-night entertainment.
As Colbert explained to the audience, the shield’s origin is tied to a pivotal moment in Marvel Comics history. When the publisher killed off Steve Rogers during the Civil War event, Colbert received a letter from then-editor-in-chief Joe Quesada. At the time, Colbert was the host of The Colbert Report, where he famously played a hyper-patriotic, satirical version of a news pundit.
“[Quesada] said, ‘Listen, we opened Cap’s will. And we read Steve Rogers’ will. And in the will it says that he believes the only person patriotic enough to wield the solid vibranium shield was Stephen Colbert,'” Colbert recalled.
The shield itself was no mere prop; it had reportedly been hanging on the walls at Marvel’s offices since 1960 before being gifted to the host. It remained on Colbert’s set for 20 years, surviving his transition from Comedy Central to CBS. Following the cancellation of his show earlier this year—a move CBS attributed to cost-cutting measures—Colbert decided the artifact belonged with Kimmel.
During the segment, Kimmel revealed the shield to the audience, and the pair mounted it behind the cameras on the Jimmy Kimmel Live! set. Kimmel noted that the shield would remain there in perpetuity, or at least until his own tenure on ABC comes to an end. Kimmel is currently in the process of negotiating a contract extension with the network, as his current deal is set to expire in the spring of 2027.
While his late-night chapter has closed, Colbert remains active in the industry. He is currently collaborating with Peter Jackson on the script for a new Lord of the Rings feature film. As the fall 2026 movie season approaches, fans of the host are eagerly anticipating his transition from the host’s chair to the cinematic world of Middle-earth.
