Kid Cudi is bridging the gap between superstar and fan by launching a unique talent search for his Kid Cudi record label, Mad Solar. The visionary artist recently announced an initiative inviting aspiring rappers and singers to showcase their skills over an original beat, with the ultimate prize being a spot in a new musical collective.
The concept began on August 5, when Cudi took to social media to propose the creation of a “trippy rap group” comprised entirely of talent discovered within his own fanbase. His vision is ambitious: he intends to select the most impressive contributors, form a group, and officially sign them to his Mad Solar imprint to “f**k up the world together.”
Initially, the artist set a high bar for engagement, requesting 100,000 likes and 20,000 reposts to move forward. However, he quickly pivoted, lowering the threshold to just 2,000 likes before confirming the release of the instrumental on SoundCloud. This move underscores Cudi’s genuine interest in finding raw talent rather than simply chasing social metrics.
Aspiring artists should be prepared for rigorous scrutiny. Cudi has warned that he will be “very critical” during the selection process. He is specifically seeking polished, original performers who possess a distinct narrative and “something to say.” To ensure a level playing field, participants were given a one-week window to finalize their submissions and were strictly instructed not to alter the original production of the beat.
The project moved quickly, with Cudi completing the track just two days after the initial announcement. While formal submission instructions were still being finalized, some fans took the initiative to share their work early. Cleveland-based musician Dave Zup caught the rapper’s attention on August 11 with his rendition. Cudi’s public response—directing Zup to check his direct messages—suggests that the search is already yielding promising results.
