In a significant legal development, Chris Brown has pleaded guilty to a charge of “affray” following a hearing on Friday regarding an alleged assault at a London nightclub. The plea marks a resolution to a case that initially involved more severe accusations, which have now been dropped by the court.
The singer was originally arrested in May 2025, facing charges of assault, suspicion of grievous bodily harm, and possession of an offensive weapon—specifically a tequila bottle. These charges stemmed from a February 2023 incident in which Brown and his co-defendant, Omololu “Hoody Baby” Akinlolu, were accused of attacking music producer Amadou “Abe” Diaw.
While both defendants had previously entered not guilty pleas, the recent hearing saw a shift in strategy. By pleading guilty to affray, the pair acknowledged that they used or threatened unlawful violence in a public place, creating a situation where a person of reasonable firmness would fear for their personal safety. According to the BBC, the more serious charges were subsequently dismissed.
Crown Prosecution Service senior prosecutor Claire Campbell addressed the severity of the incident, stating, “This was a vicious and unprovoked attack by Brown and Akinlolu in a crowded nightclub where Brown used a glass bottle as a weapon to strike the victim’s head twice. This kind of violence is entirely unacceptable, and the Crown Prosecution Service will work tirelessly — with the police and partners across the criminal justice system — to pursue cases like this, and prove that no one is above the law.”
Following the plea, both Brown and Akinlolu were released on bail. They are scheduled to return to the U.K. on September 26 for sentencing, where they face a maximum potential penalty of three years in prison.
The legal fallout from the 2023 incident also included a $16 million lawsuit filed by Diaw against Brown. While that civil action was dropped in June 2025, the nature of any potential out-of-court settlement remains undisclosed.
