The 62nd annual Grammy Awards are this Sunday (Jan. 26), and eight acts have been nominated for Best New Artist after their extraordinary trajectory from rising stars to megawatt hitmakers.
Billie Eilish and Lizzo are up in this category and the remaining three that make up the "Big Four" — record of the year, song of the year and album of the year. Lil Nas X also gets a special tip of the cowboy hat for Best New Artist, after his No. 1 Hot 100 smash hit "Old Town Road" featuring Billy Ray Cyrus held onto the top spot for a record-breaking 19 weeks.
Rosalía is on a hot streak herself, as the contemporary flamenco singer racked up three Latin Grammys last fall for album of the year and best contemporary pop vocal album for El Mal Querer, as well as best urban song for "Con Altura" with J Balvin. This time around, the Recording Academy is nominating her for best Latin rock, urban or alternative album for El Mal Querer in addition to best new artist.
Two groups have made the cut for this special category in 2020, the soulful-spoken word fusion group Tank and the Bangas and the funk-soul duo Black Pumas. Folk-dance blending singer-songwriter Maggie Rogers and roots-rock singer Yola join them as the final nominated acts.
