'The Masked Singer' Recap: T-Rex Is Now Extinct

The Masked Singer is really trying to make this Group C Championships thing happen. Alas, Nick Cannon, we’ve already sat through the Group A and Group B championships — it’s not that spectacular, so just cool your shimmery disco-ball shoes.

As ever, guiding us through the spectacle are panelists Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, Ken Jeong and Nicole Scherzinger. Will Arnett, host of Fox’s LEGO Masters, is along for the guest-panelist ride. He also voices Batman in the LEGO movies, so let’s take this moment to acknowledge that we have both Batman and Robin at the table this evening.

Night Angel

Following a group performance of Jennifer Lopez’s “Let’s Get Loud,” Night Angel peels away and offers up an energetic rendition of Isley Brothers classic “Shout.” In her clues package, a one-time high school friend of the masked diva says Night Angel often had to juggle school work with chasing her dream. She apparently even missed her senior prom. So clearly, she’s been in showbiz a long time.

Jenny, who thinks Night Angel is Toni Braxton, exclaims, “I think you are going to win this competition!” Nicole goes with Taraji P. Henson, while Will wonders if it’s Janet Jackson.

Astronaut

We get references to both the Jonas Brothers (“Only Human”) and *NSYNC (“Bye Bye Bye” and Lance Bass’ bid to go into space) in Astronaut’s clues package. And while the obvious guess would be Lance from the latter, his singing voice is too deep to be this guy.

Astronaut tears through Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You,” then offers up another clue to Nicole when he asks, “Remember when we were both together to celebrate a huge birthday?” The Pussycat Doll is clueless.

Ken idiotically suggests Astronaut is Eddie Vedder because he’s dressed like a MTV VMA statue. Will thinks it’s JC Chasez under the helmet, while Robin sticks with his guess of Joseph Gordon-Levitt from last week.

T-Rex

T-Rex’s clues include a plane, nachos and having fans of all ages. To butter up to panelist Nicole, the masked theropod belts out Pussycat Dolls’ version of Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack hit “Jai Ho.” Pretty much everyone on the panel is convinced T-Rex is actually Dance Moms starlet and “Boomerang” singer JoJo Siwa, except for Ken, who goes with Honey Boo Boo. Ken, as always, is a fool.

Rhino

The night winds down with Rhino’s mashup performance of Smokey Robinson’s “Tracks of My Tears” and Bebe Rexha and Florida Georgia Line’s “Meant to Be.” The horned contestant admits that “he’s had some painful lows in his past,” then tells Robin, “You and I are on the same track, literally.”

Robin has no idea who the masked crooner could be, so he goes with Will Ferrell. Ken thinks it’s David Hasselhoff, and Will says, “I think it’s me!” Sigh.

Eliminated: T-Rex is given the Big Bang this week. Jenny, Nicole and Robin are all convinced she’s JoJo Siwa, and it turns out they’re right. JoJo tells Nick that she paused her world tour to do this show.

What a world, folks.
