The Alt Weekly Roundup (4/4)

The Alt Weekly Roundup (4/4)

Posted: by The Editor

The Popdosemagazine Weekly Roundup is a column where our staff plugs a variety of new releases in a concise, streamlined format. Albums, singles, videos, and live sets. Check back each Monday to see what we were jamming the week prior.

Burr Oak – “Drops of Sun (feat. Jack Wilson)”

Indie-Americana artist Burr Oak has been on my radar since her debut record, Late Bloomer, dropped last summer. I gravitated towards her music due to its dream folk quality and fleshed out lyricism. Newest single “Drops of Sun” follows this same formula. A simplistic acoustic track, it was written back in 2014 with Jack Wilson yet never made an appearance until now. As one listens, Savanna croons like you’re lying on her bed, the spring sun’s rays bathing you both, as you listen to her piece her thoughts together. She has this very personable presence in her work, and like most Burr Oak tunes, “Drops of Sun” connects with its listener almost immediately.

Koyo – “Straight North”

Koyo deserves to be the biggest name in punk, and their new single “Straight North” is their best chance at getting there. It emphasizes the melody in their melodic hardcore, built on the biggest, poppiest hook of their career without sacrificing their bite.

JER – “Clout Chasers!”

After a few absolutely killer standalone original tracks — and a slew of banging ska covers as Skatune Network — JER is set to release their debut record BOTHERED / UNBOTHERED with a new single “Clout Chasers!” coming accompanying the announcement. The tune is massive, with catchy guitar riffs, tight horns, varied vibes on each pass through the verse, and lyrics like “I’m investing way too much into people who couldn’t give a single fuck about me.” Bad Times Records has put out some great ska albums the past couple years, but the first JER record is definitely one I (and I assume most fans of modern ska bands) have been eagerly anticipating, and “Clout Chasers!” seems to indicate that BOTHERED / UNOBOTHERED is going to be well worth the wait.

Satchy – “Tension”

Los Angeles-based artist Satchy recently dropped his newest single “Tension” which feels like the track to welcome in spring’s warmer weather. With its hazy atmosphere, “Tension” mellows you out as you shake off the cold from your bones and look towards sunnier days. His debut album Warm Absence is out April 22.

The Callous Daoboys – “A Brief Article Regarding Time Loops”

The Callous Daoboys are back, and they’re heavier than ever. “A Brief Article Regarding Time Loops” is the first single off the chaotic metalcore band’s upcoming LP, and it is just classic Daoboys: brutal, frenetic, unpredictable.

Night Palace – “Stranger Powers”

There’s nothing I love more than late night drives with music that completely absorbs me into dark skies and neon lights— allowing me to forget reality for a little while. Night Palace’s “Stranger Powers” does just that. A track comprised of a fuzzy, dreamy soundscape, it transports you to a lighter reality where you can understand and harness your own power. By the track’s end, maybe you’ll feel a little stronger than you did before. “Stranger Powers” is the final single off their debut album Diving Rings which is streaming now.

Moreru – 山田花子

Moreru is the musical equivalent to a kaleidoscope. Their compositions on 山田花子 are always shifting, integrating noise rock and cybergrind into their blend of Japanese hardcore/screamo. It makes for an extremely jarring listen in the best way possible and is about as extreme as this kind of music can get.

MILLY – “Illuminate”

Los Angeles shoegaze/slowcore/emo(?) darlings MILLY put out one of 2021’s best releases with their Wish Goes On EP, and on new single “Illuminate” the band taps into grunge. It’s got thick, dirty riffs, but when the chorus hits, it’s Milly at their best. It’s a new side of the band, for sure, but it’s the same band, and they’re as good as they’ve always been.

Haley Johnsen – “Higher”

Portland based indie-pop artist Haley Johnsen just dropped her melodically entrancing new single “Higher.” A song that channels self-love, it touches on never turning your back on yourself. With its moody vocals, hazy slide guitar, and swelling hook, it’s the perfect track to listen to late at night to calm your chattering mind.

The Injured List – Blue 32

Michigan alt rockers The Injured List have been more prolific since they ended their hiatus than they were during their original run – and it’s a good thing, too, because their new record Blue 32 is their most dynamic record yet. It wades through synthpop (“Wish”), heartfelt pop rock balladry (“Tomorrow”), heavy and technical indie rock (“Remorse”), and their classic anthemic pop-punk (“Different”) all without feeling scattershot or losing what made the band so good in the first place.
