p.s.you’redead – “The Mouth of Hell Is Lit with Neon”
Very few bands make metalcore you can dance to, but p.s.you’redead isn’t just any band. The three-piece very well may be the most eclectic in heavy music, and “The Mouth of Hell Is Lit with Neon,” the lead single off their upcoming LP Sugar Rot, is groovy, sassy, and above all absolutely punishing.

Tree River – “Journey Proud”
With a chorus of “all the silences / all the violent whispers and woes / this is working now / ’cause I’m journey proud / finally found my sound,” Tree River seems to be making a statement about their upcoming record Time Being — the band certainly sounds comfortable and on top of their game on “Journey Proud.” It’s a fun, riffy tune that always seems to be moving forward and introducing interesting new ideas, making the chorus sound more massive each time around.

Atlántico Sur – (ep)
The three songs that comprise Atlántico Sur’s (ep) are mid-tempo and placid; they move with the same rough elegance as Jejune’s best tracks. There’s a nice arc to each song on the EP – in true emo fashion, these are classic quiet-loud-quiet-REALLY-LOUD songs, with a nice droning ambience that gives Atlántico Sur a unique flavor in the emo scene.

Combat – “Text”
“Text,” the latest from Baltimore’s Combat, is an urgent and catchy two-and-a-half minute punk ripper. There’s a grit to both the vocals and guitar that blends well with the active bassline keeping the energy high. The song breaks down in the middle for a repeated bridge with keys added on top that does a great job of catapulting you back to the chorus of “maybe I should move to Texas / or Columbus, Ohio / somewhere I feel better / with less sporadically changing weather” to close out the track.

So Badly – “Harley Davidson”
So Badly’s new video is out and the tone fits the dreamy ’60s ballad so well. “Harley Davidson” is melancholy in the best way, and vocalist Grace Howie’s voice is so clear and compelling while the band plays lit up in muted primary colors. The James Glover directed video captures the rainy day mood of the song perfectly.

Prize Horse – Welder
Yes, Prize Horse falls in the middle of the Venn diagram between shoegaze and grunge. Yes, almost all six of the songs on Welder are mid-tempo fuzz-rockers. Yes, the band loves the ‘90s. But the most important thing of all is that Prize Horse is really good. They fit nicely alongside acts like Money and labelmates Downward, and after such an auspicious debut, it’ll be exciting to watch the Minneapolis three-piece grow.

SHIZUKU / WHITE SURF! – Discover Sister
Over the last few years, I’ve tried to devour as much Asian emo as possible, particularly the stuff that comes out of Japan. It fulfills a craving that I’m searching for a lot of the time that isn’t really filled by a lot of bands in the United States. Discover Sister, a split between SHIZUKU and WHITE SURF!, is my newest discovery and does not disappoint. It’s anthemic and bursting with energy, reminding me of every time I’ve discovered my new favorite band in some dusty basement.

Sister Ray – “Crucified”
The debut Sister Ray single is a real stunner. “Crucified” is indie folk a la early Big Thief with a grit and rasp that that band hadn’t yet fully explored; while the track itself is relatively simple, it’s got enough meat on its bones to be intriguing, and it allows Ella Coyes’ phenomenal voice to really shine on through and take command.
