From March 7 to Dec. 21, 2019, Shawn Mendes toured the globe on the aptly titled Shawn Mendes: The Tour. In nine and a half months, from shows in North and South America, Europe, Australia and Asia, Mendes grossed $96.7 million and sold 1.3 million tickets, according to figures reported to Billboard Boxscore.
Mendes’ 2019 tour easily stands as the biggest trek of his career, in terms of gross and attendance. Shawn Mendes: The Tour represents a 176% increase over The Illuminate Tour’s $35 million earnings, while 2019’s 1.316 million tickets jump 103% from the 649,000 of his 2017 tour.
Matt Galle, Mendes’ agent at Paradigm Talent Agency, noted of his worldwide success: “It has exceeded all of my expectations. We usually put together Shawn’s touring strategy, routing and time frames for the next tour 1-2 years in advance. So, it was executed to a tee. Kudos to everyone involved on the road and off.” Mendes is represented by Andrew Gertler for management and Paradigm Talent Agency for booking, while the tour was promoted by Messina Touring Group and AEG Presents (alongside local promoters in some international markets).
The tour’s final December reports impact the Jan. 25-dated Hot Tours tally with $4 million earned over four shows in Mexico. Mendes’ Dec. 17 Monterrey show at Auditorio Citibanamex earned $671,000, while his Dec. 19-21 stint at Mexico City’s Palacio de los Deportes grossed $3.3 million from nearly 43,000 tickets sold over three shows.
This strong finish accents the previous seven shows in Latin America, traveling from Brazil to Argentina to Chile to Peru. Earlier in the year, Mendes played nine shows in Australia, nine in Asia, 49 in the U.S. and Canada, and 27 in Europe.
This global approach wasn’t simply an attempt to attract new fans, but rather to super-serve Mendes’s base worldwide, and proved a strong reflection of his hard work. Galle added “It was our goal from Day 1 to make Shawn a global superstar and not just big in some territories,” which included promotional visits and festival sets around the world since the beginning of his career. Each of his tours have played more international shows than the previous one, culminating in his trans-continental personal best in 2019.
The result of the multi-year, multi-country strategy was evenly huge around the globe. The five highest-grossing engagements on his most recent tour were in Canada, Mexico, England, Australia and Brazil. Asia delivered the strongest average gross-per-night, pacing over $1 million each night in nine different countries.
Mendes’s sustained success on the road throughout 2019 may also be thanks, in part, to a continued release strategy that kept him front-of-mind among potential ticket buyers. The Canadian pop star released his self-titled album in 2018, yielding the Grammy-nominated single “In My Blood.” But he followed it up with two one-off single releases in the middle of his tour, seeing even bigger success with “If I Can’t Have You” (No. 2 debut on the Billboard Hot 100) and the Camila Cabello-duet “Senorita” (his first No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100).
