The late Mac Miller earns his first top 10 success on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart as “Good News” debuts at No. 10 on the list dated Jan. 25.
“News” also starts with a No. 4 entrance on the R&B/Hip-Hop Streaming Songs chart through 22.9 million U.S. on-demand streams in the week ending Jan. 16, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data. It concurrently kicks off at No. 6 on the R&B/Hop Digital Song Sales chart thanks to its 8,000 downloads sold in same tracking period.
The single arrived Jan. 10, one week before Circles, the rapper’s first posthumous album, was released. Miller, born Malcolm McCormick, died of an accidental overdose of fentanyl, cocaine and alcohol in his Studio City, CA, home at age 26 in September 2018. His death occurred just days before the release of Swimming, the rapper’s last album released during his lifetime.
Miller’s parents announced Circles on Jan. 8 through a post on the late rapper’s Instagram page, calling it a “companion album” to Swimming and praised producer Jon Brion, who contributed to Swimming, who “dedicated himself to finishing Circles based on his time and conversations with Malcolm.”
Before “News,” Miller’s best showing on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart was the No. 18 high of “Self Care” in September 2018. “News” marks his 11th chart entry, dating to his chart breakthrough, “S.D.S.,” which entered and peaked at No. 41 in May 2013.
Beyond its top 10 achievement on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, “News” begins at No. 8 on the Hot Rap Songs ranking and at No. 17 on the Billboard Hot 100.
