'I Need a F—ing Dance Party': Dua Lipa & Miley Cyrus Discuss Why It's the Perfect Time for 'Future Nostalgia'

Miley Cyrus chatted with Dua Lipa on Wednesday’s (March 25) episode of her Bright Minded Instagram Live series to unpack the perfect timing of Lipa’s album Future Nostalgia dropping this Friday.

To close out Cyrus’ Woman’s Wednesday episode, also featuring Reese Witherspoon, Hilary Duff and Bebe Rexha, Lipa discussed the “confusing and sometimes unsettling” time she’s had while promoting her album release, which she expedited from its original April 3 date, in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

“I was toying with the idea of whether I should push it or release it at a different time,” Lipa told the pop star-turned-host. “I made this record ’cause everyone was like, ‘Oh, second record, there’s so much pressure behind it.’ I felt like a lot was riding on this second record and I didn’t want to let the pressure get to me, so I just made a record that just made me want to dance and want to have fun and took my mind away from it. Although it’s scary to put a record out right now, I also feel like maybe music is kind of what we need. And it’s good to just get people to dance and have fun.”

She also made a special note to her fans waiting to stream Future Nostalgia from their homes on Friday: “I hope this takes your mind off everything that’s going on outside and gives you a moment of happiness.”

Cyrus confirmed she’s also impatiently waiting for the weekend so she can jam out to the singer-songwriter’s modern collection of ’80s-disco-pop-influenced tracks, which she reassured is coming out at the most necessary time of 2020. “Listen to the new record and let yourself escape, which is what music is supposed to do,” she told their tens of thousands of viewers. “There’s no right way to go through a crisis or a pandemic, there’s no right or wrong way, because we’re all doing it at the same time.

“I think that you should feel totally confident with your choice of putting out the record because you can bring like a lot of light,” Cyrus told Lipa. “I need a f—ing dance party.”

Lipa will be teasing more Future Nostalgia goodies later Wednesday by releasing the new single “Break My Heart” along with a music video. So the “Nothing Breaks Like a Heart” singer asked her for some timely heartbreak remedies. While Cyrus claimed she “just dances to [Dua Lipa’s] music if I ever feel like sh–,” Lipa advised, “I like to just go out with my friends. Wine. Dancing. Literally anything that just takes your mind away from it. I think friends is the best remedy for any of that. And wine.”
