Plus, The Black Eyed Peas and J Balvin surge with 'RITMO.'
Duke Dumont earns his seventh No. 1 on Billboard‘s Dance Club Songs chart, as “Therapy” rises 2-1 on the ranking dated March 21. The track, which sports uncredited vocals from Sharlene Hector, was remixed by Franky Wah and Will Easton, among others.
“Therapy” follows Dumont’s prior leaders “The Power” (with Zak Abel, November 2019); “Ocean Drive” (November 2015); “The Giver (Reprise)” (June 2015); “Won’t Look Back” (October 2014); “I Got U” (featuring Jax Jones, June 2014); and “Need U (100%)” (featuring A*M*E, August 2013).
“I started producing ‘Therapy’ about four years ago, when I lived in London,” Dumont tells Billboard of the cut from his album Duality, due April 17. “I wanted the song to convey a similar energy to the city I grew up in. Usually I work quickly, but I couldn’t quite get it sounding as good as I wanted. The core elements have been in place for years: composition, vocals, etc., but I was over-producing it, and overthinking it.
“Stepping away from it for around 18 months helped a lot,” Dumont continues. “When I gained the clarity of what I needed to do, it became easy. The drum programming, additional elements. Final arrangement changes were made after I had played it out. Previous versions had the Reese bass too quiet. So, molding it around the crowd reaction really helped. I usually don’t take this approach; a song like ‘The Giver’ wouldn’t have worked if I applied the same principle.
“The final stage was the string session. The aim was to give the song a long lifespan, which was the intention of the Duality album as a whole.”
Shifting to Dance/Mix Show Airplay, The Black Eyed Peas and J Balvin bolt 14-10 with “RITMO (Bad Boys for Life).” It’s the seventh top 10 for the Peas and their first since “The Time (Dirty Bit),” which peaked at No. 7 in January 2011. “RITMO” is the second top 10 for Balvin, whose “I Like It,” with Cardi B and Bad Bunny, topped the chart for a week in September 2018.
“RITMO” spent seven recent weeks at No. 1 on the multi-metric Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart, 11 weeks atop Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales and eight weeks at the helm of Dance/Electronic Streaming Songs. On Dance Club Songs, it hit No. 2.
