When it comes to expert-crafted, high quality wigs, there may be no better authority than drag legend RuPaul. The star of Netflix's AJ and the Queen has spent the better part of the last few decades wearing some stunning hairpieces, but on Monday night (Jan. 13), his knowledge was put to the test.
On Monday's episode of The Late Late Show with James Corden, Ru and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel lead Rachel Brosnahan played a game titled "Gettin' Wiggy With It," where the two had to choose who, among a lineup of five people, was wearing a wig. Brosnahan quickly remarked that the game was unfair already since Ru is "a wig expert." Ru agreed, while adding that Brosnahan was "no stranger to wigs."
While the Mrs. Maisel actress and Corden asked questions about the lineup's haircuts and personal grooming techniques, Ru went for the more introspective questions, like asking one person "Who won the 1969 World Series?", or another contestant "What was the first unit of music you bought at 13 years old?" When Corden pressed him, asking why his questions were so different, Ru let him know that "It's very informative, it really lets me know what their intellectual DNA is."
By the end of the game, Ru's specific line of questioning payed off, as he correctly guessed that the fourth person in the show's lineup did not have the long flowing locks that he sported. The question that appeared to crack the code for Ru? "Do the carpets and the drapes … do they come from Sears?" The Drag Race host then got to literally snatch the wig off of the contestant's head, while remarking as the show went to a commercial that it was a very good piece.
Along with dissecting the audience's hair choices, Ru also took a moment during an interview segment of the show to sympathize with Brosnahan's pains of having to wear a corset on the set of Maisel. "With AJ and the Queen, we have 15 or 16 hour days," he said of acting while in high drag. "It's corsets, it's face stuff, it's glue, it's an intricate system of pulleys and weights … it's not cute, and it's not for sissys. You have to be truly convicted to do this."
